Island Living

Written and Photographed for Guam Now Magazine by Pamela Tibbs

Living in a container at the edge of the jungle inspired this story. After the article appeared in print, I had a lot of visitors who wanted to know how to turn a container into a second house. A local architect visited and I wrote an article about him and his budding business of container housing through out Micronesia .

Below is how Island Living appeared in print. Following are excerpts from the story.

Island Living

Just as ancient Chamorros built their structures to harmonize with nature, many modern day residents of Guam keep their environment in mind when building a variety of shelters for outdoor living.

One important addition to most homes on Guam is the lanai. Family meetings, meals, and even parties take place in this all important area of a local home. Lanais vary in style from simple structures with outdoor furnishings to elegant rooms suitable for tablecloths and candlelight dining. Local residents think of this special addition to their homes as a place to relax and enjoy the good life.
